NICE (Natural user Interfaces for Collaborative Environments)

studio_sketches_kuche.jpgGreat news: our proposal for the Austrian Research Center “NICE, Natural user Interfaces for Collaborative Environments”, has been accepted. For the next 3 years we will focus on novel large surfaces and new interaction techniques which are going to be embedded in our daily-life environment (e.g. living room, conference room etc.). We will primarily focus on new interaction methods and build new hardware. This research will be supported by FFG and by the following partners: AMS Engineering (Austria), Ferrari (Italy), Microsoft (Austria), Nortel (Canada, USA), Natural User Interface (Sweden), RTT (Germany), Sony DADC (Austria), Team7 (Austria), voestalpine Group-IT (Austria). If you have a passion for this topic and if you are interested in joining the team, please send an email to me.

Luis Durnwalder

dsc_0005.JPGLuis Durnwalder, the governor of the multilingual (Italian, German and Ladin) province of Bolzano-Bozen, South Tyrol, visited the Media Interaction Lab. Mr. Durnwalder liked the way how the lab is working and is looking forward for further cooperation.

IncreTable @ SIGGRAPH 2008

dsc_0240.JPGThe Media Interaction Lab presents IncreTable at SIGGRAPH 2008 (August 11-15, 2008). The installation will be presented in the category “New Tech Demo”. IncreTable is a tabletop game inspired by the Incredible Machine. It provides a multi-modal interaction based on a bi-directional projection tabletop, digital pens, a depth camera, and custom-made physical objects, while attracting users for an active participation in creating content which diffuses the boundary between the real and virtual world. Kyungdahm Yun (GIST), Maki Sugimoto, and Prof. Masahiko Inami are supporting this project.

Multi Touch Workshop in Hagenberg (May 19, 08)

dsc_0318.JPGWe are pleased to announce that we are organizing a come-together workshop on “Multi Touch Surfaces”. In this workshop, we plan to explore and discuss the latest research and new paradigms of Multi Touch Interfaces, including hardware and software issues.

Laval Virtual & RTT Contest

dsc_0240.JPGThis week will become a great success for the Media Interaction Lab:

Jakob is currently presenting our our interactive game Comino at Laval Virtual 2008. Comino is a tabletop game inspired by the Incredible Machine. It provides a multi-modal interaction based on a bi-directional projection tabletop, digital pens and custom-made physical objects, while attracting users for an active participation in creating content which diffuses the boundary between the real and virtual world. Kyungdahm Yun (GIST), Maki Sugimoto, and Masahiko Inami are supporting this project.

Moreover, our interactive table FLUX has been selected as one of the three winners of this year’s RTT Emerging Technology Contest. We are also happy that Daniel Leithinger, who is currently working at NUS, has been selected as a winner. The award ceremony will take place during the 9th RTT Conference in Vienna (April 10-11, 2008). The 9th RTT Conference is a platform for professional high-end 3D visualization. The historic ambience of Vienna’s Hofburg Imperial Palace host to this year’s summit.

There’s something in the air

From Feb. 5-7, 2008, the Media Interaction Lab will present a brand-new interactive table and whiteboard at the Austrian exhibition ITnT, Vienna. You will find our device at the Microsoft booth in the corner “Innovation Microsoft”. This table has been developed together with the furniture company Team 7. The project is also supported by voestalpine Informationstechnologie, Nortel, and AMS Engineering.

Cooperation with Nortel

Nortel is working with the Media Interaction Lab to study remote conferencing solutions of the future based on multi-touch and pen-based interactive collaboration techniques.

Raimund Dachselt

On December 17, 2007 Raimund Dachselt gave a presentation about “Three Dimensional Interaction Techniques and Zoomable User Interfaces for Mixed Reality Applications”. Currently, Raimund is an associate professor at the University of Magdeburg. During his visit at the Media Interaction Lab, we decided to work together on new collaborative tabletop applications. More details about his talk can be found here.

Paper-Based Augmented Reality

A really impressive presentation was given at ICAT 2007 by Jonathan J. Hull (Ricoh). In his talk, Jonathan presented “Paper-Based Augmented Reality”, where he demonstrated a clickable paper. Check out this website for further information.

LED projector from SAMSUNG

246603.jpgA really smart LED projector is proposed by SAMSUNG. The P310 supports SVGA (native: 800 x 600, maximum: 1024 x 768) with 50 ANSI Lumen (1300 Lux), contrast 1000:1, picture format (4:3, 16:9), keystone correction (+/- 15°), and 25dB(A).
