MIL is working together with CUTE Center

cute-center-logoThe Media Interaction Lab is now working together with the Keio-NUS CUTE Center. For the next three years (starting in February, 2010) the lab will send students to Singapore for working on next generation ambient displays. We will mainly focus on flexible displays using shape memory alloy material. Together with the team in Singapore (which focuses on the hardware), the Austrian team will develop the applications and design the user studies. It is great that the lab will also get support from Inami, Nii, and Maki from the Keio University.

2 CHI full papers!

chi2010-logoThe Media Interaction Lab will present two full papers at CHI 2010. In the first paper “The NiCE Discussion Room: Integrating Paper and Digital Media to Support Co-Located Group Meetings” we introduce a novel digital meeting room design, the NiCE Discussion Room, which integrates digital and paper tools into a cohesive system with an intuitive pen-based interface. This design solution provides groups with a flexible design solution that enables them to create, access, and share information and media from a variety of sources to facilitate group discussions. The paper describes the design solution, along with results from a user study conducted to evaluate the usability and utility of the system.

The second paper “NiCEBook – Supporting Natural Note Taking” we present a digital paper notebook that supports taking, structuring and reusing notes. Through a study of note-taking habits, we observed that different strategies are used to organize and share notes. Based on these findings, we developed a design for a notebook that combines different approaches to better support these activities. The details of our design were informed by an additional online survey. With NiCEBook, we present a solution that combines the flexibility and simplicity of taking notes on paper with the benefits of a digital representation.

Staatspreis Multimedia 2009

staatspreis-multimedia-1

We are very happy to announce that the Media Interaction Lab got the Staatspreis Multimedia 2009 in the category Innovation for the project “CRISTAL”.  CRISTAL is a multi-user tabletop experience which allows an easy interaction with multiple hardware devices.

SIGGRAPH Emerging Technology Award

dsc_0375Best Emerging Technology Award for the project CRISTAL at the 36th International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH 2009). An interesting article has been published in WIRED, Engadget, and Engadget Japan. A nice Youtube video can be found here.

Vice-chancellor playing with FLUX

Pröll playing with FLUX tableVice-chancellor Josef Pröll was visiting the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences. During his visit, he also played with our interactive table, FLUX, which has been developed in cooperation with Team 7 and voestalpine group IT GmbH. The new version of the FLUX table allows both multi-touch hand input as well as pen input with high accuracy and high performance.

Stacey D. Scott @ MIL

20070712We are happy that Stacey D. Scott will visit the lab (April 27 - May 1).

Stacey is assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, focusing on developing technology that enhances human-human interaction in both face-to-face and distributed environments. During her visit, we will mainly focus on setting up a new EU-Canada exchange program and improve our face-to-face communication room concept with her expertise.

Media Interaction Lab @ MIT, CHI 2009, Harvard

bannerThe Media Interaction Lab will be in Boston (MIT, CHI 2009, Harvard), presenting two Interactivity papers. Both papers deal with multi-touch displays and demonstrate new interaction paradigms using both hand- and pen-interaction techniques. This year, CHI will be hosted in Boston (April 4 - 9). The interactivity exhibition will run this year Monday during the CHI reception (6:30-10), Tuesday from 2:30pm-6pm, and Wednesday from 2:30pm-6pm. Moreover, there are planned two talks:

Interactivity: Tuesday, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM: Occlusion-Aware Menu Design for Digital Tabletops

Interactivity: Tuesday, 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM: FLUX, A Tilting Multi-Touch and Pen Based Surface

MIT Meeting: Thursday, 6:00PM-9:00PM

Harvard Meeting: Friday, 2:00PM-5:30PM

Best Paper Award @ ACE 2008

Interactive Surface ExampleWe are happy to announce that the paper “IncreTable, a mixed reality tabletop game experience” got the best paper award at the International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology (ACE 2008). The paper was written in collaboration with Prof. Masahiko Inami and Maki Sugimoto (both are now working at Keio University), with Prof. Woontack Woo and Kyungdahm Yun.

Get the new Development Kit based on Anoto pens

Interactive Surface ExampleThe Interactive Surface Development Kit is a complete development kit based on the digital pens from Anoto. The Anoto-based pens scan a dot pattern upon motion and build a 2D representation of the drawn trajectory with a very high degree of accuracy. Based on this Development Kit, you can develop your own large surfaces (tabletop/digital whiteboard). You can order the new development kit here.

Mobilkom Austria is supporting the Media Interaction Lab

Interactive Surface ExampleMobilkom Austria is supporting the Media Interaction Lab. The lab got hardware, which will be evaluated within the NiCE research center. The overall goal is to find intuitive interfaces not only for large displays (e.g. tabletops, interactive whiteboards), but also for small devices.
