RTT Conference 2009 in Munich

RTT Conference Marker & CarLast week we went to the 10th RTT Conference in Munich. In this conference Realtime Technologies (RTT) and its partners presented their newest products in high-quality real-time rendering. Completely surrounded by really nice renderings of cars we presented a small multi-touch tabletop application for manipulating textures on 3D-models. In addition our project CRISTAL won the RTT Contest this year.

Stacey D. Scott @ MIL

20070712We are happy that Stacey D. Scott will visit the lab (April 27 - May 1).

Stacey is assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, focusing on developing technology that enhances human-human interaction in both face-to-face and distributed environments. During her visit, we will mainly focus on setting up a new EU-Canada exchange program and improve our face-to-face communication room concept with her expertise.

Masahiko Inami @ MIL

Professor Masahiko Inami will visit the MIL in Hagenberg next Monday (April 27th) and will give a talk with the topic “Towards X-Men Computing: Enhancement of Human I/O”. If technology becomes more transparent to the end user, in the future we can behave as if we have supernatural powers.
Masahiko Inami is a professor in the School of Media Design at the Keio University (KMD), Japan. His research interest is human I/O enhancement technology including HCI and robotics.

Stacey D. Scott @ Media Interaction Lab

During her visit, she taught the course “Interactive Environments” focusing on Collaborative Systems Design . Moreover, Stacey gave a highly interesting talk on “Collaborative Large-Screen Display Systems in Complex, Dynamic Team Environments”.

Ars Electronica Festival 2008

FE_2008_Sujet_001_p.jpgBeing located near Linz, we of course enjoy the Ars Electronica Festival each year! The topic of this year’s festival was “A NEW CULTURAL ECONOMY – The Limits of Intellectual Property”, dealing with the freedom of information and copyright protection, big profit-making opportunities and the vision of an open knowledge-based society. We did not actively participate in the festival program this year, but here are some impressions and pictures from the festival.

City Planning Space

Daniel and the City Planing Space

On his way to the RTT Conference in Vienna, Daniel Leithinger came for a short visit to the Media Interaction Lab. While he was here he presented his current project called “City Planning Space” that he worked on at the IML. City Planning Space facilitates multiple input devices (Anoto pens and 3D-trackers) and multiple displays to support architects during the early prototyping of new buildings. It provides a 2D map on a tabletop display and a 3D visualization of the area on a normal horizontal screen. Using digital pens a user can create new buildings on the tabletop. To see how such a building influences the surroundings users can look at the 3D view on the vertical display and navigate through it with the 3D tracker. We are also proud to announce that Daniel will continue his research studies at the MIT MediaLab soon.

Flux 4 Friends

flux_magdeburg_06.jpgOn of our Flux tables has set up at our partner lab in Magdeburg.  Prof. Raimund Dachselt and his team gave us a warm welcome and together the multi functional table was installed in a newly established lab dealing with the magic of future interaction. In addition to the rear-projection setup also a top-projection table featuring 1080p full HD-top projection will be installed in the lab. Continue reading to see more images of the installation.

Cooperation with Nortel

Nortel is working with the Media Interaction Lab to study remote conferencing solutions of the future based on multi-touch and pen-based interactive collaboration techniques.

Raimund Dachselt

On December 17, 2007 Raimund Dachselt gave a presentation about “Three Dimensional Interaction Techniques and Zoomable User Interfaces for Mixed Reality Applications”. Currently, Raimund is an associate professor at the University of Magdeburg. During his visit at the Media Interaction Lab, we decided to work together on new collaborative tabletop applications. More details about his talk can be found here.
