Multitouch @ Laval Virtual

laval_08_multitouch.jpgLike my previous post on my multi-touch experiences at this years Cebit trade fair I also want to sum up my recent experiences with multi-touch projects at the Laval Virtual Exhibition. While virtual reality still being the main focus of the exhibition, interfaces always have been a very important part of this come-together of the virtual reality community. At Laval Virtual 2007 our project “Shared Design Space” was pretty much the only large scale interactive table that enabled accurate multiuser interaction (video). This year however multi touch is big and it is also big in Laval!

City Planning Space

Daniel and the City Planing Space

On his way to the RTT Conference in Vienna, Daniel Leithinger came for a short visit to the Media Interaction Lab. While he was here he presented his current project called “City Planning Space” that he worked on at the IML. City Planning Space facilitates multiple input devices (Anoto pens and 3D-trackers) and multiple displays to support architects during the early prototyping of new buildings. It provides a 2D map on a tabletop display and a 3D visualization of the area on a normal horizontal screen. Using digital pens a user can create new buildings on the tabletop. To see how such a building influences the surroundings users can look at the 3D view on the vertical display and navigate through it with the 3D tracker. We are also proud to announce that Daniel will continue his research studies at the MIT MediaLab soon.

Laval Virtual Trophies - We are one of the Winners!

laval_08_comino_13.jpgWe are very proud to announce that our project “Comino” has won one of the prestigious “Laval Virtual Trophies”. Comino was selected to be the best project in the category “Video games and Entertainment” and was therefore rewarded one of the coveted glass trophies. More fotos after the break!

Laval Virtual & RTT Contest

dsc_0240.JPGThis week will become a great success for the Media Interaction Lab:

Jakob is currently presenting our our interactive game Comino at Laval Virtual 2008. Comino is a tabletop game inspired by the Incredible Machine. It provides a multi-modal interaction based on a bi-directional projection tabletop, digital pens and custom-made physical objects, while attracting users for an active participation in creating content which diffuses the boundary between the real and virtual world. Kyungdahm Yun (GIST), Maki Sugimoto, and Masahiko Inami are supporting this project.

Moreover, our interactive table FLUX has been selected as one of the three winners of this year’s RTT Emerging Technology Contest. We are also happy that Daniel Leithinger, who is currently working at NUS, has been selected as a winner. The award ceremony will take place during the 9th RTT Conference in Vienna (April 10-11, 2008). The 9th RTT Conference is a platform for professional high-end 3D visualization. The historic ambience of Vienna’s Hofburg Imperial Palace host to this year’s summit.

Flux 4 Friends

flux_magdeburg_06.jpgOn of our Flux tables has set up at our partner lab in Magdeburg.  Prof. Raimund Dachselt and his team gave us a warm welcome and together the multi functional table was installed in a newly established lab dealing with the magic of future interaction. In addition to the rear-projection setup also a top-projection table featuring 1080p full HD-top projection will be installed in the lab. Continue reading to see more images of the installation.

Impressions from TEI’08

Thomas Seifried and Matt Jervis at TEI’08From February 18 to 20 the research-community for Tangible User Interfaces came together at the 2nd conference on Tangible Embedded Interaction in Bonn, Germany. Matt Jervis from University of Waikato and Thomas from the MI-Lab presented the results of their work on enhanced filing folders and cabinets called “Aroo - Smart Folders“. One of the conference highlights was the keynote talk by Hiroshi Ishii presenting the vision behind his work and that it might effect people in 200 years (see picture in more…)

Flux at ITnT

flux_thumb2.jpgFrom February 5-7, we will present the latest result of the Media Interaction Lab at Austria’s Trade Fair for Information Technology and Telecommunication (ITnT).

Make sure coming to the exhibition. You will enjoy Flux, a hybrid between interactive table and whiteboard, at the Microsoft booth right in the center of hall A, Messezentrum, Vienna.

Interactive, multi-touch devices are rapidly increasing in popularity across many industries. Flux allows multiple modes of interaction in a variety of configurations, allowing increased flexibility, usability and productivity. Flux’s application interface is automatically optimized for the intended use depending on its orientation. Flux can be used as a sketch board, a discussion table or a white-board. Transformation between different orientations is single handedly achieved easily and elegantly.

There’s something in the air

From Feb. 5-7, 2008, the Media Interaction Lab will present a brand-new interactive table and whiteboard at the Austrian exhibition ITnT, Vienna. You will find our device at the Microsoft booth in the corner “Innovation Microsoft”. This table has been developed together with the furniture company Team 7. The project is also supported by voestalpine Informationstechnologie, Nortel, and AMS Engineering.
